Japanese confectionery making experience / Matsukawa Chaya
Creating seasonal expressions: Toyama's traditional Japanese sweets with your own hands.
At Matsukawa Chaya, located along the Matsukawa River by the Toyama Castle Ruins Park, you can enjoy a wagashi (Japanese confectionery) making experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in Toyama's rich wagashi culture.
Toyama Prefecture is known as a "tea town," ranking among the top three in Japan for the proportion of people who practice the tea ceremony.
The foundation of this culture has been the beautiful Japanese sweets that reflect the scenery of each of the four seasons.
The experience uses a DIY kit for making Japanese sweets.
It comes with all the necessary tools and illustrated instructions, so even beginners and people from overseas can participate with confidence.
We offer year-round designs such as Masu-no-sushi, as well as seasonal designs such as watermelon and Kureha pear.
The finished Japanese sweets can be enjoyed on the spot with matcha tea, or taken home to enjoy later.
These short experiences, which allow you to connect with Japan's sense of the seasons and aesthetics, are popular as a way to spend time between sightseeing, as well as for group tours and programs catering to inbound tourists.
Enjoy a gentle cultural experience unique to Toyama by the Matsukawa River.
