What is a Gojōin (castle stamp)?

Gusuku seal

A castle stamp is a commemorative item given to visitors of castles throughout Japan.
It's like a "castle stamp," and it's a cherished memento of visiting a castle.

The designs vary from castle to castle, ranging from those with the castle name written on washi paper to those featuring the castle lord's family crest, signature, or illustration. Most are pre-printed and can be purchased at tourist information centers inside or around the castle.

Unlike temple stamps (Goshuin), which serve as proof of worship, castle stamps are simply a way to enjoy a visit to a castle. There are no specific rules or customs to follow when collecting them, making them easy to collect, which is part of their appeal. Currently, they are distributed at over 2,000 castles and have become a popular way to enjoy travel.

Toyama Castle's official castle stamp

normal version

Fifth edition: Toyama Castle Goshuin (Regular Edition)

The standard castle stamp for Toyama Castle features a historically significant design incorporating the family crests of Sasa Narimasa, who served as the castle lord during the Sengoku period, and the Maeda family, who were the lords of the Toyama domain during the Edo period.

* Sasa Narimasa's family crest: Square-shaped four-eyed knot crest(Sumitateyotsumeyuimon)

* The family crest of the Maeda family of the Toyama Domain: clove and plum blossom crest(Chōjiumebachimon)

The castle's name is prominently displayed, and the design evokes the history of successive castle lords, expressing the history and prestige of Toyama Castle.
This stamp is perfect not only as a memento of your visit to the castle, but also as a symbol of Toyama Castle's history, making it highly recommended for those receiving a castle stamp for the first time.

Limited Edition (5th Edition)

Fifth Edition: Toyama Castle Goshuin (Castle Stamp) - Limited Edition

The fifth limited edition features a special design with a sense of gravitas, using black-dyed Etchu Yao washi paper and adorned with a gold foil-stamped image of Toyama Castle. The contrast between the deep black and gold enhances its elegance and formality.

Just like the regular version, the design incorporates the family crests of Sasa Narimasa, the lord of Toyama Castle, and the Maeda family, the lords of the Toyama Domain, resulting in a castle stamp that evokes a sense of history and beauty.

*The "Etchu Yao Washi" used here is a traditional craft proudly produced in Toyama City. It is known for being used as medicine packaging paper by "Toyama medicine sellers" who delivered medicine from the Toyama domain to all over Japan during the Edo period. It is stronger and more durable than ordinary washi paper, and its high-quality texture is its main appeal.

*Limited quantity: 5,000 pieces
