A town where everyday life becomes the purpose of travel.Toyama.

In this town where nature and daily life coexist, if you look up, the Tateyama mountain range will come into view. The mountain range that appears on clear days is a breathtaking "rewarding view" that will leave you speechless.

Every day, streetcars rattle along the foot of the mountain, and the sight of them moving forward with Mount Tateyama in the background is one of the iconic scenes of Toyama. They support students commuting to school and working people in the mornings, and sometimes even serve as transportation for travelers—they are a reassuring presence in this town.

And right next to our homes, we have conveyor belt sushi restaurants and traditional sushi shops. Each piece of sushi, made with fresh fish from Toyama Bay, is a taste we take pride in. Our local specialty, "masu sushi," has been passed down for over 100 years and has been loved for so long that every family has its favorite shop.

In 2025, Toyama City was selected as one of the New York Times' "52 Places to Go." One of the reasons for this selection is that it is a city where people can encounter a rich and fulfilling daily life.

There may not be any flashy tourist attractions, but there are definitely things here that you won't find anywhere else, and the ordinary daily lives of the people who live in this town might just be what makes a trip so moving for visitors.

Come to Toyama, a place where everyday life becomes the purpose of your trip. Discover many people and attractions in this city.

OUT

A town where daily life and tourism intersect.

Take a tram ride and stroll through the city streets and along the canals. The scenery, where the remnants of the city and the pulse of modernity intertwine, has a comforting quality that makes you want to capture it in photographs.

Toyama has long been known as a "city of medicine." The glass culture that arose from this history has now spread to become a "city of glass," where many artists are active. A visit to the museums and workshops will reveal a refined sparkle.

In autumn, there is the Owara Kaze no Bon festival in Etchu Yatsuo. The light of paper lanterns, the sound of the kokyu (Japanese stringed instrument), and the elegant dancing blend into the townscape, leaving a quiet and lingering impression on travelers.

A memorable piece of sushi from the "town of sushi"

The catchphrase in Toyama is "kitokito," a local dialect word meaning "freshly caught." Because the fish are caught that morning in Toyama Bay, you can enjoy their firm texture and melt-in-your-mouth flavor.

The chefs use kelp curing and a light touch of vinegar to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients. In spring, you can enjoy firefly squid; in summer, white shrimp; in autumn, red snow crab; and in winter, yellowtail. You can enjoy the bounty of Toyama Bay in every season.

And then there's "masu sushi," a specialty of Toyama. There are over 20 specialty shops in the city, and each shop has its own unique flavor, depending on how it's pressed and the amount of vinegar used.

Just right for both travel and everyday life.
