My first time in Toyama City | Canal cruise and a stroll through Iwase
Toyama Sightseeing Model Course | Classic Toyama Spots to Visit in Half a Day
This is a recommended half-day sightseeing itinerary for those visiting Toyama City for the first time.
Starting from Fugan Canal Kansui Park, which is within walking distance of Toyama Station, we will take a canal cruise to the historic port town of Iwase.
On the way back, I took the tram to Toyama Station.
It's easy to enjoy even on a short stay, and it's also recommended for those who want to efficiently explore Toyama using public transportation.
Kansui Park is a beautiful waterside space offering views of the Tateyama mountain range.
It is also known as the park that has "the most beautiful Starbucks in the world."
On a canal cruise,
You can enjoy a slightly different view of Toyama from the waterfront.
The final stop, Iwase, is a port town that flourished as a port of call for Kitamae ships.
Within the historic townscape, old merchant houses, sake breweries, and cafes are scattered about.
One of its charms is the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely stroll amidst the tranquil atmosphere unique to a port town.

Now, off to the port town of Iwase!
The Toyama Station North Exit Plaza was renovated in April 2022.
The area has been improved with a roundabout for buses and taxis, and spacious pedestrian areas, making it more convenient to use.
The surrounding area features a boulevard square and new facilities, giving a sense of the new vibrancy in the area north of the station.
Fuiwa Canal Kansui Park
A "city oasis" where you can be soothed by the greenery of the trees and the sparkling surface of the water.
A waterfront park that utilizes Toyama's natural environment and the history of the Fugan Canal.
Within the park, you'll find an observation deck at Tenmon Bridge offering views of the Tateyama mountain range, a restaurant, and a Starbucks Coffee that was once hailed as "the most beautiful in the world," allowing you to relax and enjoy your time by the water.
At night, the area is illuminated, and you can also enjoy a cruise to the port town of Iwase (operating from late March to late November).

Enjoy a leisurely cruise along the canal, taking in the beautiful nature and historic cityscapes.
The "Fugan Water Line" connects Fugan Canal Kansui Park to the port town of Iwase.
Enjoy the waterside scenery from stylish solar-powered boats and electric boats. Along the way, you'll pass through Nakajima Lock, a rare lock in Japan known as a "water elevator," offering an exciting and impressive experience.

Walking through a townscape where old and new cultures blend together.
Iwase was a port town that flourished from the Edo period to the Meiji era through trade by Kitamae ships.
The historic townscape remains intact, and you can still feel the atmosphere of the past in places like the "Former Baba Family Residence." In recent years, the area has been attracting attention with the increase in galleries, select shops, beer pubs, sake bars, and restaurants that have been renovated from traditional buildings.
Toyama Station
Finally, we chose souvenirs in front of the station.
You can enjoy shopping for souvenirs in front of the station.
If you have the time, I also recommend taking photos of the sunset and night view around the station, as well as the streetcars.
Here's the route for this time!
