Toyama City in January
Toyama Through the Seasons
January is the coldest month of the year in Toyama City, with many rainy and snowy days, and the cold winds make the perceived temperature drop. If you are properly dressed for the cold and waterproof, you can enjoy walking around the city in winter with peace of mind.
As the snow-covered landscape of the Tateyama mountain range deepens, the three-dimensional ridgeline becomes clearly visible when the conditions are right. The probability of seeing it is only about one to two days a week, so the day it suddenly appears in the eastern sky is a "lucky day."
When it snows, the familiar cityscape around Toyama Castle and the streetcars take on a wintery appearance. Illuminations and snow play are in full swing, and winter delicacies such as yellowtail, crab, and cod roe are at their peak.

Having a waterproof outer layer with a hood that can handle snow is reassuring.
There will be many cloudy, rainy, or snowy days, so be careful of wet or icy roads.
1Moon clothing
- Daytime
- Thick coats/down jackets, etc., prioritizing warmth.
- morning and evening
- It's comfortable to have accessories like a hat that covers your ears, gloves, and a scarf.
For innerwear, we recommend layering items that provide good insulation, such as Heattech, and creating a layered look that is easy to put on and take off.
For snowy or rainy days, a highly waterproof outer layer is a good idea.
For footwear, waterproof sneakers or boots with non-slip soles are recommended.
(On days with heavy snowfall or when there are many puddles due to snowmelt, waterproof boots (rubber boots if necessary) are recommended.)
On days when you're spending a lot of time outdoors, having a hand warmer makes things much more comfortable.
*The sidewalks in central Toyama City are equipped with snow-melting systems and road heating, making them relatively easy to walk on even in winter. However, they can freeze in shaded areas and during the morning and evening, so it's best to wear non-slip shoes.
*On the other hand, if you are traveling by car, it is essential to have studded tires (winter tires).
Tateyama Mountain Range
In January, when the snowscape deepens, the mountain ridges become clearly defined and three-dimensional when the conditions are right.
From various points throughout the city, if you happen to look up to the east, you can see the magnificent Tateyama mountain range.
The probability of seeing it is roughly 1-2 days a week. That's why the days you do see it are considered "lucky days."
