"Malt syrup" has been produced in Toyama since the Edo period, alongside the local pharmaceutical industry.

It was once used to make bitter medicines easier to swallow.
Shimakawa Ame Shop uses no sugar, instead carefully boiling malt and starch in the pure water of Toyama, and continues to uphold the same manufacturing method that has remained unchanged since its founding over 360 years ago.

It can be enjoyed on its own, spread on toast, or used to sweeten drinks and dishes—it's incredibly versatile.
