Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
A thrilling traverse of Japan's Switzerland, using six different modes of transport.
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a unique mountain sightseeing route in Japan, connecting Toyama and Nagano prefectures by traversing the heart of the Tateyama mountain range.
This "road to the sky" takes you on a journey that covers an altitude difference of approximately 2,000 meters in one go, by transferring between six different modes of transportation, including a cable car, a highland bus, a ropeway, and an electric bus that runs through tunnels.
Among them, the most popular is the "Snow Valley," a spring specialty located in the Murodo area at an altitude of 2,450m.
From mid-April to mid-June, buses travel between towering "snow walls" on both sides, and some sections are open for walking – a truly special season. It feels as if you've stepped into another world.
And one place you should definitely visit in Murodo is "Mikurigaike Pond".
This beautiful crater lake, formed by volcanic activity, offers a "mirror-like" view on windless days, with the Tateyama mountain range reflected in the water. In the snowmelt season, the contrast with the white world is striking; in summer, the clear blue deepens; and in autumn, combined with the surrounding autumn foliage, it creates a tranquil "spectacular view above the clouds." It's also appealing because you can easily enjoy it by strolling around the Murodo area, even without mountaineering equipment.
In summer, you'll be enveloped in the cool air of the highlands, and alpine plants will be in full bloom. In autumn, the mountainside will be dyed red and yellow, creating a spectacular display of "autumn leaves above the clouds."
The greatest charm of the Alpine Route is that even the same path can offer completely different views depending on the season.
You can enjoy it from mid-April to the end of November, and we recommend both a quick day trip or a relaxing "cloud-top stay" at a mountain hotel along the way.
This is a special mountain trip that will transport you to the breathtaking scenery of the Alps, even if you don't climb the mountain yourself.
