Babake (former Babake residence)

Sightseeing

The Iwase Residence: A place where the memories and beauty of the Kitamae ships come alive.

Experience a dignified historical space in the former residence of one of the five leading Iwase families, representative Kitamae shipowners of the Hokuriku region.
The building's charm lies in its overwhelming scale and architectural beauty, including a 30-meter-long tori-niwa (a type of garden) and a 33-tatami mat grand hall.
You can encounter the "memories of Kitamae-bune culture" told by the storehouses themselves, such as Maekura, Ichibankura, and Nibankura.
Enjoy craft beer at KOBO Brew Pub, a converted rice warehouse.
Protected as a nationally registered tangible cultural property, it offers a tranquil atmosphere and a refined experience.

The Babake, who built great prosperity as owners of Kitamae ships from the late Edo period to the Meiji era.
He was known as the foremost of the five major Iwase families and made a name for himself as one of the leading Kitamae ship owners in the Hokuriku region.
This is an old family business that expanded into steamship management during the Meiji era, and has developed while adapting to the changing times.

The current residence was rebuilt after the Great Fire of Higashi-Iwase in 6.
The 30-meter-long toriwa (a type of garden) and the spacious 33-tatami mat oi (a large hall) quietly speak to the hustle and bustle and prestige of yesteryear.
In addition to the main house, the front storehouse, the first storehouse, the second storehouse, and the rice storehouse have all been preserved, and the atmosphere of the time when Kitamae-bune (northern route trading ship) culture was thriving still subtly lingers.

Furthermore, the "KOBO Brew Pub," a craft beer brewery housed in a renovated rice warehouse on the premises, is also popular.
You can enjoy the comfortable atmosphere that is characteristic of Iwase, where a stately building meets a fresh sensibility.

Designated as a nationally registered tangible cultural property in 28, this is a special place for a stroll through Iwase, where history and beauty are harmoniously balanced.

Additionally, the Babake offers room rentals.
We can also take attractive photos utilizing traditional Japanese houses.
