Toyama Central Botanical Garden
The colors of the four seasons, plants from around the world, and the scenery of Tateyama. Toyama Prefectural Central Botanical Garden.
Located in Fuchu-machi, Toyama City, the Toyama Prefectural Central Botanical Garden is one of the largest botanical gardens in the Hokuriku region, cultivating and displaying approximately 6,600 species of plants on a vast 24.5-hectare site. From outdoor exhibition gardens to large greenhouses, there are many points of interest scattered throughout the grounds, making it a popular spot where visitors can encounter seasonal changes and new discoveries with each stroll.
The outdoor exhibition garden is broadly divided into two areas: the "World Plant Zone," where you can encounter plants from all over the world, and the "Japanese Plant Zone," which recreates the natural environments of various regions of Japan.
While you can leisurely admire rare plants from around the world, as well as plants that are familiar to us in our daily lives, such as those that offer beautiful flowers and fragrances, Japan's vegetation changes with the seasons, allowing you to enjoy different scenery depending on when you visit.
The park's large greenhouse offers a fascinating opportunity to enjoy a diverse array of plants all at once, including rare tropical flowers, tropical fruits like bananas and pineapples, vibrant orchids, and the Chinese camellia native to Yunnan Province. Furthermore, there's a cool room where you can admire alpine plants up close, leaving you wondering, "What kind of flower will I encounter next?"
There are plenty of seasonal attractions. In spring, approximately 140 varieties of cherry blossoms adorn the park, creating a beautiful contrast with the rapeseed blossoms and a vibrant atmosphere with nighttime cherry blossom events.
The approximately 300-meter-long row of Somei Yoshino cherry trees leading to the center of the park creates a scene that resembles a tunnel of flowers when they are in full bloom.
In summer, the Paraguayan giant water lilies, which can grow up to 1.5 meters in diameter, are in full bloom in the park's pond, and the annual event where children can stand on the leaves is a popular way to create lasting summer memories. In autumn, the park is enveloped in vibrant autumn foliage, and in winter, the crisp air allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Tateyama mountain range.
Whether you're visiting with family and friends in a lively atmosphere, or simply strolling at your own pace while admiring the plants, it's a truly pleasant experience.
At the Toyama Prefectural Central Botanical Garden, where you can "see, learn, and enjoy," experience the changing seasons up close.
