Inotani Checkpoint Museum

Sightseeing

Experience the border between Etchu and Hida provinces and travel back in time to the Edo period with a VR palanquin ferry experience.

A museum located at the site of a former checkpoint on the "border" between Etchu and Hida provinces, where you can experience the story of travel and logistics.
This valuable exhibition, based on the Hashimoto family's historical documents, provides a realistic glimpse into the movement of travelers and goods during that period.
Experience the popular "basket-ferry VR experience" that lets you feel the "means of air travel" across borders where bridges didn't exist.
A quiet and peaceful space where you can admire the statues of gods and Buddhas carved by Enku up close.
A convenient location, easy to stop by on a drive through the Jinzu Gorge or on your way to or from the Hida area.

Located in the southern part of Toyama City, near the Jinzu Gorge, the "Inotani Checkpoint Museum" is a museum built near the site of the Nishi-Inotani checkpoint, which guarded the border between Etchu and Hida provinces during the Edo period.

This was once a place that travelers always passed through, and the museum uses panels and dioramas to gently introduce what the checkpoint was like in those days.
From the ancient documents left behind by the Hashimoto family, who served as checkpoint guards for generations, we can see stories of travelers, the movement of goods, and people crossing national borders.

And the "basket ferry" is a tradition that retains a strong sense of history unique to this region.
In a time when it was forbidden to build bridges in canyons with cliffs and rapids for border security purposes,
Apparently, they crossed the river in a palanquin.
The facility has VR equipment, and by wearing goggles, you can experience what it's like to actually move through the air in a cage.

Furthermore, the statues of gods and Buddhas left behind by the ascetic monk Enku are also on display, and their simple and warm appearances allow visitors to feel the faith of travelers and local people alike.

A place that makes you want to take a detour during your drive to experience a story of history.
This small history museum is a great place to stop by if you're traveling to the Jinzukyo Gorge area or the Hida region.
