A sophisticated space filled with light and glass; a museum that has also attracted attention from the New York Times.
The Toyama Glass Museum is located within "TOYAMA Kirari," a multi-purpose complex designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma.
With its exterior inspired by the Tateyama mountain range and the soft light filtering in through the louvers made of locally sourced wood, this museum truly symbolizes "Toyama, the city of glass."
Toyama City boasts a rare environment in Japan where glass art is created, nurtured, and showcased, encompassing the Toyama Glass Art Institute, which trains glass artists; the Toyama Glass Studio, a place for creation; and the Toyama City Glass Museum, where glass art can be appreciated. The entire city has fostered a glass culture.
The highlight of the museum is the permanent exhibition "Glass Art Garden" on the 6th floor.
The works of Dale Chihuly, a leading figure in contemporary glass art, are so dynamic and colorful that you'll be surprised to learn they're made of glass. The museum also hosts exhibitions featuring artists from Japan and abroad, offering new discoveries with every visit.
The same building also houses the Toyama City Library Main Branch and a shop and cafe, making it appealing for those who want to enjoy art appreciation, reading, and a coffee break all in one place.
This is a place where you can spend a day fulfilling yourself while finding your favorite glass artwork.
