Toyama Prefectural Center for Archaeological Operations

Sightseeing

A museum of learning and discovery where you can experience the romance of ancient times.

This easy-to-understand exhibition offers a glimpse into the past life of Toyama through unearthed artifacts dating from the Paleolithic period to modern times.
The permanent exhibition, "Kotake Shell Mound Exhibition," allows visitors to see authentic Jomon human remains and pottery dating back approximately 6,000 years.
Archaeological experiences such as making magatama beads, starting fires, and braiding cords are popular and captivate both adults and children.
There are three exhibitions with different themes each year, so you can discover something new every time you visit.
There's a quiz rally inside the museum where you can get postcards and stickers, allowing both children and adults to learn about history while having fun.

Toyama Prefectural Center for Archaeological Operations stands nestled at the foot of the Kureha Hills, embraced by abundant nature.
Established in 52 as the first prefectural facility in Japan, it is responsible for the preservation and utilization of buried cultural properties.

The museum displays numerous artifacts dating from the Paleolithic period to modern times, allowing visitors to imagine what life was like for people in the past through pottery and stone tools.
You might experience a strange feeling, as if you could transcend time if you just reached out your hand.

Popular hands-on activities include making magatama (comma-shaped beads), starting a fire, and making kumihimo (braided cords), all of which are sure to captivate both children and adults.
One of the attractions of this place is that you can learn by actively participating, rather than just watching.

In addition, exhibitions showcasing valuable cultural properties are held periodically, including the "Sakai A Site Excavated Artifacts," which are designated as important national cultural properties, and the "Etchu Region Archaeological Materials (Collection of Hayakawa Shosaku)," which are registered tangible cultural properties.
This provides ample time to quietly engage with history and experience "ancient Toyama" at your own pace.

Why not embark on a short, intellectual journey, surrounded by tranquil nature and rich history?
