The story of the streetcar
Toyama City's Trams: A City's Transportation System Connecting Time
Beginning and Evolution
Toyama City's streetcar system began operating in 1913 (Taisho 2), as a means of access to the then-local exposition, the "One Prefecture and Eight Counties Joint Exhibition." It is one of the earliest streetcar systems to open on the Sea of Japan side.
Later, as the city developed, the railway lines expanded, and currently, Toyama Chihō Railway is in charge of operating them.
LRT and a New Era
In 2006, the Toyama Light Rail (Portram) was introduced, revitalizing the former Toyama Port Line. Its low-floor vehicles, which make boarding and alighting easy, and sophisticated design attracted attention, making access to the Toyama Port area much more convenient.
In 2015, the city tram began operating to the new "Toyama Station" stop located beneath the Shinkansen elevated tracks. Following the completion of the elevated conventional railway lines in 2019, the north-south connection was realized on March 21, 2020. A seamless tram network centered around Toyama Station was completed.
"Compact City Toyama" and streetcars
Toyama City is promoting "Compact City Toyama," aiming to be a city where people can live and work on foot, with public transportation at its core. Trams are at the heart of this initiative. By concentrating living, working, and learning functions in front of stations and in the city center, and connecting them smoothly with LRT* and buses, travel times are shortened and the environmental impact is reduced. Low-floor vehicles and short stop intervals make it easy for everyone to get around, and the design is friendly to the elderly and those with children. For tourists, riding, walking, and riding again—enjoying the city while exploring is a unique Toyama experience.
Its current state and how to enjoy it
In present-day Toyama City, from next-generation low-floor vehicles such as the "Centram" circular line that circles the city center, and the "Portram" and "Santram" connecting the north and south, to old-fashioned, charming vehicles and retro trams,
A variety of unique vehicles are driving around the city.
From the train window, you can enjoy views of the Tateyama mountain range, as well as sightseeing spots such as Toyama Castle and the Toyama City Glass Museum. It's also recommended to get on and off the train and enjoy exploring the city.
*What is LRT (Light Rail Transit)?
This next-generation tram system features low-floor vehicles with minimal steps, short stop intervals, frequent service, and barrier-free access.
